“You say you want a revolution”: IEA Side Event at Climate Change COP 14

On 10 December, the IEA held a side event at the UN Climate Change Conference in Poznan, Poland. With the theme “You say you want a revolution - energy policy and technology for a sustainable future,” the well-attended event included presentations on the World Energy Outlook 2008, Energy Technology Perspectives, IEA energy efficiency work, and IEA non-Member country outreach activities.

Gas Cut Will Affect European Countries Differently
Commenting on the impact of Russia’s reduction of gas exports through Ukraine, Ian Cronshaw, head of the IEA energy diversification division, emphasised, “You cannot think of Europe as a single gas region. This is not a straight forward situation as each country has a different way of dealing with the problem.” He added that Bulgaria would be the most affected country and would be hit immediately because of their limited stocks and heavy dependence on gas from Russia.

Growing natural gas role in OECD brings benefits, concerns
In an article focusing on pressures in the natural gas market, Ian Cronshaw, head of the IEA energy diversification division, stated that “It’s clear that gas has become the fuel of choice for power generation in the OECD…” He added that gas “does have its advantages: it means the power sector can respond quickly, in short lead times, and gas can deliver significant environmental benefits. But having said that, it raises issues of supply security, and it links the gas and power sectors in a way that we haven’t seen before. It means that if gas prices go up, so do power prices, because gas is the marginal fuel in the mix.”
